Small dhurries for the entryway, kitchen, and bath

By Shyam Ahuja |
entryway dhurrie for room

The first floor a guest meets is the one by the door. It is usually given to a floor mat. The mat is chosen quickly and replaced often.

A small dhurrie can hold that same place. It lies flat. It takes the traffic of the day. And it carries the palette of the rooms beyond it.

The entryway

A single door sits well with a piece of 2 ft x 3 ft. A wider hall or a double door takes 3 ft x 5 ft. The door should clear the surface. A few centimetres of floor between the two is enough.

The palette matters more here than anywhere else in the house. Ivory and cream belong further inside. At the threshold, indigo, ochre, and madder hold the dust of the street without showing it. A stripe or a multi palette does the same work.

On stone or tile, a thin pad is set beneath the piece. It keeps the dhurrie in place. It also keeps grit from the underside.

The Kitchen

In the kitchen, the dhurrie becomes a runner. It is set along the counter. It covers the stretch between the stove and the sink, where most of the day is spent standing.

The runner stops short of the walls. Floor left visible at each end keeps the room composed. A width of 2.5 ft suits most counters. The length follows the counter itself. Runners are made to measure through the custom design service.

Cotton is the considered choice for this room. It washes easily. It takes the occasional splash of water.

Turmeric and oil are the usual concern. A darker ground or a patterned field keeps a mark from reading. A spill is met with cold water and a white cloth. It is blotted, never rubbed. Warm water sets a stain in cotton.

For a kitchen in daily use, the stain coating adds a further layer of protection.

The bath

A cotton dhurrie belongs to the dry side of the bath. The dressing area is one such place. The floor beside the vanity is another. So is the step outside a shower enclosure that stays dry.

It does not belong on a floor that is wet through the day. Cotton left damp develops mildew. Where water does reach the piece, it is hung to dry after use. It is never left rolled while damp.

One measure is enough. Where a towel could rest on the floor, a dhurrie can rest too.

Sizes, by place

A front door takes 2 ft x 3 ft. A foyer or a double door takes 3 ft x 5 ft. A kitchen counter takes a runner near 2.5 ft wide, its length set by the counter. A dressing area takes 2 ft x 3 ft or 3 ft x 5 ft. A balcony or utility door returns to 2 ft x 3 ft.

Pieces smaller than 3 ft x 5 ft are made to order. The guide to dhurrie sizes sets out every room of the house.

Keeping the piece

Small pieces are the simplest to keep. A dhurrie of 4 ft x 6 ft or less can be washed at home. Cold water, a mild soap, and a flat surface are enough. It dries flat or hung, away from hard sun.Between washes, suction without a rotating brush lifts the dust.

The piece is turned twice a year. It wears evenly that way.The full routine sits in Cleaning and Caring for a Cotton Dhurrie.

For houses with children or pets, the entry on washable dhurries follows the same line.

The house

Shyam Ahuja is a house of dhurries, carpets, and textiles, made in India since 1970. The work has always sat in private residences, embassies, and hotels that hold the standard. The full range sits in the dhurrie collection.

A small piece is made to the same standard as a large one. It is simply set in a smaller room. Often it is the first piece a house receives.

Questions

What size dhurrie suits a front door?

A single front door suits a dhurrie of 2 ft x 3 ft, made to order. A wide foyer or a double door takes 3 ft x 5 ft. The door should open freely over the surface. A thin pad beneath keeps the piece in place on stone or tile.

Can a cotton dhurrie be used in a bathroom?

A cotton dhurrie can be used on the dry side of a bathroom. A dressing area or the floor beside a vanity suits it. It is not suited to a floor that stays wet. Cotton left damp develops mildew, so a piece that meets water is hung to dry after use.

Does a dhurrie slide on tile or marble?

A dhurrie is flat and can move on smooth stone or tile. A thin pad set beneath it holds the piece in place. The pad also keeps grit away from the underside, which helps the surface wear evenly.

Can a small dhurrie be washed at home?

A cotton dhurrie of 4 ft x 6 ft or less can be washed at home. Use cold water and a mild soap on a flat surface. Dry it flat or hung, away from hard sun. Larger pieces are sent for professional cleaning.
